Letter from the Head of School

Dear Friends,

Welcome to the website of Alexandria Country Day School, a dynamic independent day school for girls and boys from kindergarten through the 8th grade.

The educational experience of a K-8 school has been shown to be one of the healthiest and most productive for all children, and the ACDS community exemplifies all the elements of the best K-8 schools: a well-rounded education, small classes, engaged and experienced teachers, an academically-challenging curriculum, a competitive inclusive athletics program, and a supportive parent community. With the confidence and self-esteem a K-8 school provides, it is no surprise that children who graduate from ACDS are accepted into the high schools of their choice and excel in the most competitive high schools in the area including Gonzaga, T.C Williams, the Potomac School, Madeira, St. Stephens & St. Agnes, the Field School, Episcopal High School, and Sidwell Friends just to name a few.

ACDS has grown each year since it was founded in 1983. In September of 2010 we celebrated the addition of 14,000 square feet of space, including a new regulation-sized gymnasium, a cafeteria, and a dedicated performing arts center. These facilities complete the campus and enhance the academic and athletic programs.

We are a close-knit community that values and nurtures the relationship among teachers, parents, and students. Each year, we review and improve our curriculum and we are accredited by the Virginia Association of Independent Schools. Our vision for each academic year is clear: we want to bring out the best in each student—academically and socially, as scholars, athletes, artists, writers, scientists, and honorable citizens.

If you are the parent of a young child searching for a nurturing kindergarten environment or the parent of an older child seeking a rigorous and supportive program during the challenging middle school years, we invite you to explore our website, become acquainted with our programs and teachers, and most importantly, visit the school to see our mission statement come alive in the spirit and the special atmosphere that characterizes ACDS. We look forward to meeting you soon.

Sincerely,

Scott Baytosh
Head of School

On April 30th, students and faculty at ACDS took steps to significantly reduce the school’s carbon footprint and do their part to stop global warming. Lights in the classrooms and offices were kept off, reusable containers were brought for snack and lunch, paper was reused and vegetables were planted in our garden. The day also served as a kick-off of a lunch composting program. Lead by the seventh grade, an all school assembly helped to inform students how these seemingly small actions, in particular when done every day, can make a big difference. Click on the title above to watch a documentary on global warming created by a group of our seventh graders.
ACDS students were transported to the Middle East today when they visited the Islamic Bazaar created by our 6th graders. A culmination of the 6th grade’s study of Islam, the PAC’s transformation into a Bazaar included shops for rugs, tea, games and storytelling. Student and faculty visitors to the Bazaar were given dirhams with which to purchase goods as they interacted with the 6th grade merchants. Even Mr. Baytosh got in on the action and managed to get a great deal on a rug! (Click on the title above to see pictures.)

ACDS’s Festival of Learning has always been about students and teachers exploring a single topic that celebrates our world, its cultures, diversity, and rich legacies, but this year it’s personal. Students have learned and heard about various ways that their “world” will be different in the future. Click above to see pictures of The 2013 Festival of Learning: Climate Change.
